Chula Vista Historical Sketch

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Christian Science services in Chula Vista had their beginning in 1916, when three families read the Lesson-Sermon together on Sunday mornings.  On March 25, 1917, the first public services were held in a store building on Third Avenue.

Christian Science Society, Chula Vista, was recognized as a branch The Mother Church on December 12, 1918, and incorporated under California law August 22, 1923.  On May 7, 1927, the Society became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chula Vista.

The church held the first services in its own edifice at 332 Del Mar Avenue on December 2, 1928.  Dedication services were held March 26, 1939, all indebtedness having been liquidated.

In 1968 the Del Mar property was sold, and on February 18, 1970, the first services were held in the new church edifice at 41 “I” Street.  The Sunday School building was completed and occupied a few weeks later.  Free of debt, the new church was dedicated on February 19, 1978.
