Christian Science & the power of healing prayer

Celebrating the new year with family and friends is always fun, so when New Year’s Eve comes around each year my thought naturally goes back to the past and all the good times we shared together. But something very wonderful occurred one New Year’s Eve that has now added a very special memory. In fact anytime I think about December 31st, I am immediately filled with gratitude to God for His ever-present love and protection.

This is what happened to me one New Year’s Eve shortly before midnight. It came to me very strongly to stop what I was doing and find a quiet spot where I could pray for my son, his wife, and my daughter, who were out with their friends. 

My prayer went something like this: "God, I feel I need to pray. Please let me feel your love and protection for my family. I know you are always with us because we are your children, made in your likeness and can never be separated from You. I just need to understand this better right now because I feel afraid for them."

Then I just was quiet and tried to listen. The thought came to me that the still small voice that had asked me to pray was also present with my family talking to them and they would hear the angel messages they needed to hear. With that answer my fear left me and I felt at peace again and went back to having fun at the New Year’s Eve party I was attending.

On New Year’s Day, when I saw my son, he told me a most wonderful account of God’s protection related to an auto accident that he had witnessed. He, his wife, and his sister were driving home from a movie that let out right at midnight. His best friend and his girlfriend were following them in their car. They all stopped for a red light at an intersection.

He told me, "It was a T-intersection with our road going straight and the other road entering from the left. Our car was the first car in the right lane, with our friend's car behind us. There was a young lady in a small Toyota half-ton pickup in the left lane. The light turned green and we proceeded. The Toyota and our car were almost out of the intersection when a young man in his car ran the red light. His car clipped the back end of the Toyota, the Toyota bumped into the back end of our car and his car continued through the intersection coming to rest on the hill on the right side of the road. We had no idea what had happened until we got out and saw the other car on the side of the road." 

"What amazed us was how the young man’s car got through the intersection without hitting my friend’s car. I remember the time being just a few minutes past midnight; California had just passed a law which took effect at midnight that New Year’s Eve, requiring a 24-hour jail stay for anyone caught driving while intoxicated. The young man who ran the red light and the young lady driving the Toyota were both under the influence. So when the police arrived, they were both handcuffed and placed in a patrol car to spend some jail time thinking about the choices they had made that night. In retrospect the fact that his car had clipped her pickup led to her being caught, preventing possible problems down the road, and the fact that she bumped us kept her from losing control of her pickup which could have led to a more serious situation. Our protection was so complete."

What added to the wonderful memory of this whole experience is that the mother of my son’s best friend had a similar urge, at the same time I did, to pray for her son’s protection. Her prayer was the Psalm 91 from the Holy Bible and the sentence she prayed was "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."

Over the years as a student of Christian Science I have learned to be obedient to the still small voice or angel feelings that I have heard or felt. I think of it as a spiritual sense. I’ve learned this from my study and practice of truths I’ve read in Mary Baker Eddy’s groundbreaking book on spirituality and healing entitled, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She states it this way, "When it is learned that the spiritual sense, and not the material, conveys the impressions of Mind to man, then being will be understood and found to be harmonious." (p. 214) Here Mrs. Eddy uses the word Mind as another name for God. Further on in her book she describes "God’s thoughts passing to man" as angels. (p. 581)

Not just on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, but every day I am grateful to God for His ever-present care and protection. As my son witnessed and acknowledged, “Our protection was so complete.” Thank God!
