Christian Science & the power of healing prayer
I have ridden horses all my life, and have had the opportunity many times over the last several years to be a part of cattle brandings. Prior to the branding, one of my favorite activities is gathering the cattle on horseback.
Several years ago, while participating in this, I came upon a young calf that had been separated from its mother. As I attempted to guide the calf back toward its mother, the calf determined to run in the opposite direction. My horse decided to buck as we chased after the calf, and, gratefully, I managed to recover and remain on the horse. However, during that process I severely injured my ankle.
As I rode back to the ranch house for lunch, I kept thinking about a Bible story of the man who was lame from birth, and laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of those that entered into the temple. The disciple Peter healed him instantly. I also thought about several passages from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy.
When one of my relatives was informed of my experience, I was given several other thoughts to ponder. These included the idea that: “God never punishes man for doing right, for honest labor, or for deeds of kindness, though they expose him to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy: 384:6-9)
Another helpful thought was that the horse had not intended any harm, and I could not experience any harm as a result. An hour or so after this occurred, we returned to the ranch house for lunch, where I was able to dismount the horse and get myself to the house. We had a full afternoon of work yet to accomplish, and I determined to continue riding, as I was a useful addition to our limited crew. I continued to think and pray as I rode, though much of my time was spent focusing on the tasks at hand.
When we finally returned for the day, I dismounted and was not able to put any weight on my foot. A relative lovingly carried me to the house, and my young niece kept me company while other relatives created a crutch for me out of a mop. I was fearful because I had never used crutches before, I did not exhibit much balance, and the ground was uneven and littered with rocks. I was also disappointed that I might not be able to participate in the activities scheduled for the next day. I had been practicing roping, and was looking forward to trying my skills during the branding.
Several traditional human and medical remedies were presented to me, either from my thought or expressed by others present. These included applying heat or ice and keeping the ankle raised. However, I realized clearly that these material actions were not the treatment I needed. After dinner, I was able to call a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly shared spiritual healing ideas. I then read the Bible Lesson. I managed to take a shower, which felt like a huge accomplishment, and I slept comfortably that night.
The next day, I started out using my mop-crutch, but shortly found that I could put a little weight on the ankle and get around without the crutch. I was able to help out with the branding activities a little on foot, and later I was given the opportunity to rope a few calves from horseback!
When we flew home the next day, my husband graciously handled my bags and I was able to accomplish all the walking our travels involved. When I arrived home, I was comforted to find the full Bible verse describing Peter’s healing of the lame man: “And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.” (Acts 3:7) Within a week of returning home, my ankle was healed so completely that I could not recall which ankle had been the problem!
