Skiing accident averted

Christian Science & the power of healing prayer

Everlasting arms of Love are beneath, around, above - from Christian Science Hymnal

My husband and I have led very active lives.  For many years we went camping, backpacking, hiking and skiing.  When I was a bit older, and should have been wiser, we were skiing at Mammoth Mountain.  One afternoon, our group decided to go to the very top and ski off the cornice.  I had never done this before, but I agreed.

This was NOT a good plan.  I was tired.  I was not an expert skier, and it was very steep.  But off I went, up the gondola to the top of the mountain.  I took one look over the edge and knew I was in trouble.   But, there was no turning back, so I started traversing the steep slope. On my first turn, I hit a patch of ice, lost my balance, and tumbled over.  The next thing I knew, I was coasting straight down the mountainside like a human penguin, on my tummy, legs above me, one ski off, and the other ski on.

I was gaining speed rapidly and there was nothing to stop me for a long distance, except other skiers and a rocky cliff far below.  I didn't want to hurt anybody else, or myself, and realized very quickly that if I didn't do something, I would just keep sliding, faster and faster, until disaster occurred.  Claiming strength and dominion as spiritual qualities that God had given me, I made a mighty effort, swung my legs around underneath me, and dug my feet into the mountainside.  I stopped in a spectacular spray of snow just as my husband caught up to me. My thought was filled with gratitude as I realized the truth of a favorite hymn:

“Everlasting arms of Love are beneath, around, above;
God it is who bears us on, His the arm we lean upon.”
Christian Science Hymnal, #53

What an experience!  And what an important lesson it was for me.  I learned that God is still with us, guiding and guarding, even when we're being foolish.  And I also learned that sometimes we need to take a strong stand.  We may be sliding into bad habits, coasting along with our peers, oblivious of mistakes that need correcting.   We need to exercise the mental and spiritual discipline that puts us back on the right path.
