Always at home in God's kingdom

Christian Science & the power of healing prayer

CHURCH: - a quote by Mary Baker Eddy

It was October of 2003, and my husband and I had been married for a year when we decided to look for a house so that we could move out of our apartment.  This was during a crazy time in real estate where people were scrambling for homes to buy and there was a lot of competition with rising prices.  We had a real estate agent, and we were shown several homes which we weren't interested in.  There just didn't seem to be much selection at the time.

Then one day, my co-worker told me about a house she had seen for sale by owner in her neighborhood.  So, I drove by that day and looked at it.  The owner was out in the front yard watering when I stopped by.  He was not living in the house, but happened to be there at the time.  He was kind enough to show me the house right then.  It was a beautiful, well-cared-for home, which was a little larger than the other houses in the neighborhood.  As soon as I saw the beautiful view of the backyard from the large windows, I was sold.

Well, it turns out that the owner already had another offer, but he told me that he would allow my husband to come with me the next day so that he could see the house.  So we did, and he said that he wanted to sell us the house, even though the prior offer was 10% more than the asking price.  We told him that we were interested in the house and wanted to put in an offer.  I asked him if he would allow our real estate agent to come with us to see the house.  He was adamantly opposed to working with any real estate agent and wanted to draw up the papers himself.  However, he reluctantly agreed to let her into the house a few days later.

The three of us then met with the owner.  After talking with our agent for a little while, the owner totally changed his attitude and decided that he wanted to work with her.  By the time our deal was completed, he loved her and we even received several thousand dollars off the sale price for minor repairs.  In addition, he threw in several extra items that he thought we might be able to use.

During this search for a home, I worked with the definition of church from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. "CHURCH: The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle."  I used this definition to overcome feelings of frustration and despair about some of the behavior I had seen and sensed from people fighting over housing.  I did not want to participate in such behavior and had been praying to find a house that was being sold by a truthful and ethical owner.  As a result of this prayer, I felt that we found a home with a foundation based on God's Truth and Love, and am forever grateful.

I am still praying with the same concepts, knowing that even being faced with the idea of financial lack and bad economy I will always be at home in the kingdom of God!
