Christian Science & the power of healing prayer

For many years I suffered from severe depression.  During these times, I remember feeling so depressed that I just didn’t want to live anymore; and I would spend every minute I could sleeping to escape the mental, as well as the physical, pain that I was feeling.
 
But I was brought up in a home that put into practice Christian Science – the Science of Christ or God’s laws of infinite good that Jesus used when he healed - and I witnessed many wonderful healings that were the result of prayer alone. 

For example, my mother was healed when doctors said she only had minutes to live.  After giving birth to my sister, my mother began hemorrhaging and the doctors didn’t find out about it until it was too late, and they told my father she had only a few minutes left to live.  My mother was able to communicate to my father that she wanted him to call a Christian Science practitioner to pray for her; so my father, who was not a Christian Scientist, did make that call, and my mother was completely healed.
 
So I knew, deep down in my heart, that I could be healed through prayer too.  But I needed help, so I called a C.S. practitioner to help me pray.  Over the phone, the practitioner reminded me that it was Easter-time – and that meant resurrection, and resurrection was not something that just happened to Jesus a long time ago, it was something everyone could experience.  I could experience the resurrecting thought that would lift me out of depression by trusting God’s law of infinite good to govern and control my thoughts and my life harmoniously.
 
In the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which is a wonderful companion to the Bible as it explains the Bible and is also a great source of healing thoughts for prayers, the author Mary Baker Eddy, gives us a definition for "resurrection" (page 593):

Resurrection.  Spiritualization of thought; a new and higher idea of immortality, or spiritual existence; material belief yielding to spiritual understanding.  Mary Baker Eddy
 
After I hung up the phone, I have to admit, I still felt very depressed.  I didn’t feel the effects of prayer right away.  But later on the following day something happened that I will never forget.  I was out in front of my house, feeling quite sorry for myself, when, all of a sudden, these thoughts of depression just lifted right off me, and I felt this great sense of peace.  And the thought came to me that I was the child of God, loved and protected – and this was enough to keep me happy forever.
 
After that, I never suffered again from this debilitating depression - and that was over 15 years ago.
 
What I love about Christian Science is that it always tells you that things are better than what the material senses are telling you.  That you are better, infinitely better, than what the material senses are telling you, and this resurrecting thought is a prayer that heals. 
 
My material sense of a life that was sometimes good, but often depressing, was lifted up to a higher idea of my real spiritual existence that is always good and safe in God’s Love and this message of resurrection was for me a prayer that healed me of depression.
