Christian Science & the power of healing prayer

I had been feeling caught up in the commercialism of Christmas.  The Christ presence was certainly with me, but I was having trouble feeling the real meaning of the holiday season.
 
Several experiences with rude customers and unhelpful salespeople had left me feeling frustrated. Although I enjoy shopping, it seemed better just to avoid any more stores and focus and concentrate instead on what Christmas really means.
 
I wanted to try something different than my usual prayers and reading of the Bible and Christian Science literature. I didn’t work with any specific citations or prayers, but instead read What Christmas Means to Me and Other Christmas Messages by Mary Baker Eddy. She celebrated Christmas with her soul, or spiritual sense, and observed it in humility and charity.
 
Mrs. Eddy stated, "The basis of Christmas is the rock, Christ Jesus; its fruits are inspiration and spiritual understanding of joy and rejoicing, — not because of tradition, usage, or corporeal pleasures, but because of fundamental and demonstrable truth, because of the heaven within us." As I read this, calmness and peace filled my thought. 
 
Two days before Christmas there was still more shopping to do, but I went about it without a worry, and with genuine patience and love for everyone I came across. Feeling very protected and charitable, I spent the earlier part of the day doing things for others. In return, strangers were very kind and returned these favors.  Instead of feeling like a magnet for inconsiderate people, I started expressing the God-like qualities we all possess.
 
When I gave a shopping cart to a lady that was waiting, another woman came up to me and gave me her cart. When I was looking for a parking spot, a man reversed his truck and gave me the spot he had taken.  In response to my thanks, he was very gracious, and wished me a merry Christmas.
 
The kindness and generosity of strangers that day was really amazing. It seemed the Christly spirit I was reflecting was being expressed in people all around me. The Christ was walking with me and showing me the way. It was a humbling experience to feel the grace that was normal and natural, not forced.
 
The Christ is always in our consciousness - not only at Christmas, but every day.
